Most first itineraries fail in the same way: too many cities, too few recovery hours, and a fantasy that Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, and Alexandria can share one breathless week without consequences. They cannot.
Start here by picking a primary corridor. Add a second only if your calendar still has clean nights after transfers. Read the seasonal board before you lock hotel deposits. Then open the individual guides for street-level detail.

01 · Capital
Density, museums, markets, and the first lesson in Egyptian timing. Treat Giza as an early half-day, not a full identity for the city. Keep evenings for neighborhoods that still feel lived-in after tour buses leave.
Pair with: Alexandria overnight · or Luxor flight south · or desert departure west.
02 · Nile temple towns
The place where landscape and monument finally explain each other — river, cliffs, cultivation. Split banks across days. Never schedule your deepest tomb visit for mid-afternoon in summer. Leave one unstructured Nile hour on purpose.

03 · Coast
Hurghada-area ease, Marsa Alam quiet, Sinai-side dive culture — “Red Sea” is not one interchangeable beach. Match the town to boat logistics, nightlife tolerance, and how far you will travel for the reef you actually want.
Pair with: Luxor inland block · Cairo bookends · nothing else in the same 48 hours.
04 · Mediterranean
Humid light, Corniche walking, café hours, and seafood that rewards overnight stays. Day-tripping from Cairo is possible and usually mediocre. Give the city an evening and a slow morning if you can.

Extended routes
A Nile stretch can be the gentlest transfer in Egypt — or a buffet that happens to float. We write for travelers who care about deck mornings, honest land-day pacing, and cabins that face something other than the hallway carpet.
Nile field notes
Chalk formations and hard stars. Overnight is the point. Quality depends almost entirely on group size, wind planning, and operators who treat silence as the attraction — not a gap to fill with noise.

Cairo 3 → Luxor 3 → Red Sea 3–4. One domestic flight or overnight train built in as recovery, not as a same-day monument sandwich.
Cairo 3 → Alexandria 1 → Red Sea 3. Skip Upper Egypt this round if heat or time is hostile. Come back for Luxor with a cleaner calendar.
Cairo 2 → Luxor 3 with a short Nile segment woven in → Aswan pause 1–2 → fly out. Coast optional only if you steal nights from nowhere else.
